Back to the FLICKING 80s: Solitaire vs. Tom Fry

Flick Solitaire relights the 80’s wave with it’s latest deck designed by a games industry icon.

London, UK, January 28, 2021 - Wake up your Walkmans, and go ‘old skool’ as Flick Solitaire, the first-class solitaire game on mobile levels up it’s pledge to work with and promote global game creators, indie game artists, diverse and underrepresented artists. Available in-game today is the ‘totally tubular’ Midnight Turbo deck designed by Tom Fry, Sonic Mania art director from indie game studio Evening Star . New players can pick the deck free this week and enjoy addictive games of solitaire, elevens, and pyramid.

Since Flick Solitaire’s launch in Summer 2020 the game has curated its own impressive art collection produced by 16 distinctive and diverse worldwide artists.

Creator Ian Masters relishes discovering fresh artwork and talent on Instagram however first met Tom Fry at the popular co-working space for video games development, Playhubs in London, UK.  Both Ian and Tom have created video games powered by the fully open source games dev engine Solar 2D (previously titled Corona SDK). The appeal and availability of such an engine is hugely important to Tom.

‘Solar2D was the first ever engine I made a shipped game on, it’s hugely important these types of engines are out there. Unity & Unreal were around in 2011 when we started on Major Magnet, but the appeal of Solar2D is their focus on a particular type of game or rendering technique. We wanted to make a strictly 2D title on a limited budget, Solar2D fitted that bill perfectly without feeling overwhelmed by offers of many tools, bells and whistles.’

Ian is a massive fan of Tom’s work, especially Major Magnet, and was really keen to see his work in a card deck. Ian originally shared a simple design brief for a neon 80’s vibe.

‘We love working with other game creators and artists. I had especially wanted to work with Tom for a long time. Once we found the right moment in Tom’s schedule we worked on a few early deck concepts and what we have in the finished deck Midnight Turbo is too cool for school!  Tom's unique art style is simply beautiful - it truly brings back the 80’s vibe!’

The 80’s style so far untouched by Tom in any previous creative pursuits posed no problem. The deck’s vintage violets and marvellous mauves showcase Tom’s nostalgia and impressive skills in both 3D model and 2D design techniques. The cards main feature points to Tom’s ideal vision of an 80’s motorcar inspired by his love of exotic cars from the time.

‘I've been building up my skills in 3D in recent years and thought this might be a good opportunity to model a set of assets to use in a deck, which it didn't really seem like anyone else had yet tried in Flick Solitaire at the time. I'm also a little bit of a petrol head and have a fondness for exotic cars from the 80's and 90's I refer to the deck as being "mixed digital media" however as it's not solely composed of 3D models, but also custom typography, 2D vector art and procedural generation.’

Tom, formerly the art director for PagodaWest Games, the home of many app store featured titles, including Major Magnet, who also worked in conjunction with famed developer Christian Whitehead on Sonic Mania (2017) and Sonic Mania Plus (2018) is the perfect addition to the list of collaborating artists who have designed card decks for the game.

Flick Solitaire has an impressive partnership record with video games creators and artists.  Previous collaborations include the ever popular deck Deep Space Desperados by Rex Crowle, games creator of Knights and Bikes and Tearaway.  Also the pixel pumped game titled RogueJack deck by Micheal Wilson, Founder of Ponywolf, an indie game development studio based in Boise, Idaho.  Primarily known for RogueJack and Knights of the Card Table, and two time Apple Game of the Day featured developer plus Google Indie partner.  All featured decks are available for fans forever.
