The Fieldwork update for Space Engineers brings significant enhancements to PvE gameplay, starting with a complete overhaul of Cargo Ship and Unknown Signal encounters. NPC Cargo Ships now feature updated AI, modern weapon systems, and faction-based color schemes, adding both visual variety and tactical depth. These ships belong to various factions — such as traders, pirates, and military groups each with distinct behaviors, creating more dynamic and varied encounters. Additionally, Strong Unknown Signals have been revamped to provide high-end loot, offering players valuable targets that can lead to either cooperative or competitive gameplay.

Along with these updated encounters, Fieldwork introduces new blocks. The Prototech Fusion Reactor provides a massive energy output, making it ideal for large grids in need of power. The Small Oxygen Tank is a compact solution for exploring low-oxygen environments, while the Large Grid Small Connector allows small grids to dock with larger ones, enhancing building possibilities. To further support teamwork, the new Refill Station allows players to quickly refill their oxygen, hydrogen, and energy, perfect for cooperative play in PvPvE scenarios..

The Fieldwork update also introduces a range of quality-of-life improvements. Keybinding options have been expanded, providing more flexibility for custom controls, while reworked action slots in automation blocks make their functionality clearer and more intuitive. The Projector block has been enhanced with directional indicators, simplifying blueprint placement and block control.

Alongside the free update, the Fieldwork Pack is available for purchase. This DLC introduces a set of new decorative blocks designed for creating secret bunkers, scientist labs, mobile research outposts, and more, making it ideal for players looking to enhance their builds and explore the theme of scientific experiments. All these and more changes can be found in the official changelog.

Starting today and running through May 30th, players can take advantage of increased drop rates for all skins on Steam from Unknown Signals. Strong Unknown Signals, which have a chance to drop the rarest skins, are especially rewarding during this period. Additionally, the cooldown between possible skin drops has been reduced, giving players more chances to earn cosmetic rewards as they play.
