Worldless’ Dev Details Devil May Cry and Octopath Traveller Inspirations In New Video

Ahead of the release of Thunderful, Coatsink and Noname Studios atmospheric 2D adventure, Worldless, available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch on November 21st, the developers have released a second video delving deeper into the mechanics of the game. Following on from the first combat breakdown video, it explains how the game implements inspirations from titles like Devil May Cry and Octopath Traveller in its mix of turn-based and real-time combat, as well as giving as a tease of the game’s challenging boss encounters.

Creative and Animation Director, Joel Roset, explains the importance of the “Absorption Tank”,  a key mechanic present in combat that fills when the player inflicts damage on an enemy and is depleted by taking hits. He details the risk/reward calculations players must make when deciding to slowly fill the Absorption Tank and reveal all of the attack inputs or speed things up a notch by guessing inputs. Joel also talks about how Worldless incorporates a system similar to the ‘Style Meter’ in Devil May Cry games when it comes to absorption damage and a block system inspired by the Octopath Traveler ‘Stagger’ system. He even offers a taste of Worldless’ challenging boss fights and how combining your skills is key to success.

Worldless is set at a time where the rules of existence remain undefined. In this abstract setting, players will discover entities with opposing goals. One half is fixated on the virtue of their nature, the other is seeking to exchange it for their demise. This inevitably thrusts them into conflict as they battle for transcendence and you will find yourself embroiled in that fight, left to interpret the game’s mysterious narrative and its themes of growth and understanding for yourself.
